Centralized Renewable Energy System (CRES)

This project creates a renewable energy system for Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC). The facility leverages the nearby City of Lincoln’s Theresa Street Waste Water Treatment Plant, which discharges clean treated gray water into the Salt Creek. The Centralized Renewable Energy System (CRES) pumps treated water into a new utility plant that uses the water for heating and cooling of the buildings on campus. The new utility plant houses equipment that transfers thermal energy from the treated gray water to the CRES distribution piping on campus. Buildings connected to the CRES system can reduce energy consumption up to 30% over conventional heating and cooling systems. The CRES distribution piping was built into campus infrastructure along with the other underground utilities.
